Mickey Rourke to star in Vidhu Vinod Chopra ‘Broken Horses’



The Oscar nominated actor Mickey Rourke of ‘The Wrestler’ fame is in talks to star in Bollywood director Vidhu Vinod Chopra’s Hollywood debut film “Broken Horses”. He is one of India’s best-known filmmakers. Rourke will play the one of the key roles in this film. Reliance Big Pictures is producing the film.

The film ‘Broken Horses’ is touted as a gangster flick and is Chopra’s original story, is the work of award-winning writer Abhijat Joshi (‘Lage Raho Munnabhai’, ‘Eklavya’) and script consultant Jason Richman (‘Bangkok Dangerous’, ‘Swing Vote’). Mark Johnson (‘Chronicles of Narnia’, ‘The Notebook’ and ‘Rain Man’) is the executive producer of the film, while Chris Buchinsky (‘Hancock’, ‘Spiderman 2’) is the story-board artist. The film is expected to be shot across New Mexico, New York and Albuquerque.

Rourke’s upcoming films include “13” and Sylvester Stallone “The Expendables”.

‘Slumdog Millionaire’s Simon Beaufoy to write ‘Leap Year’


Simon Beaufoy is set to write Spyglass Entertainment’s upcoming comedy film “Leap Year”. Recently, Beaufoy won a Golden Globe award and got nominated for an Oscar for his acclaimed screenplay for “Slumdog Millionaire”. His writing credits include “Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day” and “The Full Monty,” for which he also received an Oscar nomination in 1998.

The film ‘Leap Year’ stars Amy Adams in the lead role. Anand Tucker of “And When Did You Last See Your Father?” is going to direct the film.

The film ‘Leap Year’ is about a young woman who travels to Dublin to propose to her boyfriend on leap day, Feb. 29. Tradition says men have to say yes on that day. But when bad weather threatens to ruin her plan, she embarks on a turbulent trip with an Irish innkeeper to pull off her proposal before it’s too late.

Fassbender, Dominic West, Olga Kurylenko in Neil Marshall’s ‘Centurion’


Michael Fassbender, Dominic West and Olga Kurylenko have signed on to star in British writer/director Neil Marshall’s upcoming action adventure ‘Centurion’. Marshall’s directing films also include ‘Dog Soliders’, ‘The Descent’ and ‘Doomsday’.

The film is touted as a thriller set during the Roman invasion of Britain in A.D. 117, tells the story of Quintus Dias, sole survivor of a Pictish raid on a Roman frontier fort, who marches north with General Virilus’ legendary Ninth Legion, under orders to wipe the Picts from the face of the Earth and destroy their leader, Gorlacon.

Michael Fassbender films include in “300”, “Hunger”. He will be next seen in Quentin Tarantino’s “Inglourious Basterds” and Peter Webber’s “Wuhtering Heights”.

As for Dominic West, his credits include 300, Hannibal Rising, and Punisher: War Zone. Olga Kurylenko starred in “Hitman,” “Max Payne” and “Quantum of Solace”.

20th Century Fox to produce ‘The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader’


20th Century Fox has decided to co-produce “The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader“, the third installment of the “Chronicles of Narnia” series with Walden Media. The film is expected to start at end of summer 2009. The flick is based on the best selling novel of the same name by C.S. Lewis.

Fox and Walden will split costs, and it may take around $140 million to produce “Dawn Treader.” In comparison, “The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian” cost more than $200 million to make.

It is known that both Fox and Walden will split the film’s production and P&A costs, are still working out the approval of final script as well as the shooting budget, which are reportedly much lower than the $225 million budget of “The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian”.

“Caspian” opened last year and collects $419 million worldwide. “The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe,” the first film in the series has collected $718 million.

Michael Apted is set to direct the film. Ben Barnes, Skandar Keynes and Georgie Henley back as Prince Caspian, Edmund and Lucy. Will Poulter will also join the cast as Eustace Clarence Scrubb.

Keira Knightley, Colin Farrell to star in ‘London Boulevard’


Keira Knightley and Colin Farrell are set star in a film tilted “London Boulevard” in the direction William Monahan. His writing credits include “Kingdom of Heaven”, “The Departed”, “Body of Lies” and “Boulevard”. The film is based on the best selling novel “London Boulevard” by Irish author Ken Bruen.

The film is about a London criminal, who after releasing from prison, tries to give up the gangster life by becoming a handyman for an isolated young actress. The shooting of the flick will be started this summer in London.

Recently, Farrell has won a Golden Globe Award for his stellar performance in “In Bruges”. His upcoming films include “The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus,” “Triage” and “Crazy Heart”.

Knightley was last seen in the film “The Duchess”. She will be next seen in ‘Last Night’ and ‘The Beautiful and the Damned’.

Jamie Bell, Daniel Craig to star in Steven Spielberg’s ‘Tintin’


Paramount Pictures and Sony Pictures have finally made an official announcement to start the production of Steven Spielberg’s upcoming 3D motion capture film ‘The Adventures of Tintin: Secret of the Unicorn’.

Jamie Bell will act as Tintin, while Daniel Craig will play the role of despicable Red Rackham, a pirate who attacks Haddock’s ship The Unicorn. The film is also starring Andy Serkis, Simon Pegg, Nick Frost, Gad Elmaleh, Toby Jones and Mackenzie Crook.

The script was written by Steven Moffat, Edgar Wright and Joe Cornish. Peter Jackson, director of the Lord of the Rings trilogy, will produce the Tintin movie and he is set to direct the second flick in the upcoming series.

Bell’s credits include “Billy Elliot”, “King Kong” and “Jumper”. He is currently working with Daniel Craig in “Defiance”.

Neil Jordan to direct ‘Graveyard Book’


Oscar winning director Neil Jordan is going to direct the big-screen adaptation of Neil Gaiman’s best selling novel “The Graveyard Book”. He is also the co-writer of “MirrorMask” and “Beowulf”.

Gaiman made the announcement on “The Today Show” during his press tour for ‘Coraline’, another one of his books to make the move to the silver screen. He said the film will be live-action one. Framestore, an FX production company of London, which recently worked for the film ‘Australia’, is going to work on effects for this flick.

‘The Graveyard Book’ is about a boy who is adopted by the occupants of a graveyard after the death of his parents.

Jordan’s directing films include “The Crying Game”, “Interview with the Vampire” and “The Brave One.” He also won the Oscar for best original screenplay for “The Crying Game”. Jordan is also currently working on “Ondine”, starring Colin Farrell, a fantasy drama about a fisherman who discovers a mysterious woman in his fishing net.

Sylvester Stallone’s first look in ‘The Expendables’


This is the first look of SYLVESTER STALLONE in his upcoming action flick “The Expendables“. The 62-year-old actor star showed off his ripped tattooed body during filming on his latest film The Expendables.

The film is also starring JASON STATHAM, JET LI and Golden Globe winner MICKEY ROURKE to play a group of mercenaries recruited to overthrow a South American dictator.

The film is about a group of mercenaries who infiltrate a South American country to overthrow its dictator and free the population. The film is part of a two-picture deal Stallone is making the film with Nu Image/Millennium Films. Sylvester Stallone is directing the film.

“SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE” bags 10 Oscar nominations


‘Slumdog Millionaire’ has bagged 10 (Academy Awards) Oscar nominations while ‘The Curious Case of Benjamin Button’ leads Oscars with 13 nominations. ‘Slumdog’ film was directed by Danny Boyle and is an adaptation of Indian diplomat Vikas Swarups’s novel ‘Q&A’. Christian Colson has produced the film on Celador Films Production banner.

AR Rahman and Resul Pookutty have won a total of four nominations. Rahman has won total three nominations for Best Original Score and Best Original Songs, Resul has bagged one in the Sound Mixing category for ‘Slumdog Millionaire’.

Bollywood’s well-known lyricist Gulzar has been jointly nominated with Rahman for the song ‘Jai Ho’. And it was a dream come true for another Indian lyricist Maya Arulpragasam who won a joint nomination with Rahman for ‘O saya’.
